How much water does a foot of snow produce?
November 8, 2017Snow myths
November 29, 2017Fall is here and as the leaves turn colors it is inevitable that they will fall to the ground. Those leaves will be picked up by the wind and by the rain and many will eventually make their way towards sewer drains. If you own or manage a parking lot keeping these drains clear can be a big help not only when the white stuff begins to fall from the sky but all year round.
Sewer drains are everywhere that you look. Think about what happens when they get clogged. Water will begin to pond there as it cannot get into the drain. For heavier rains that pond will only get bigger and bigger and begin to flood your parking lot. That water has nowhere to go except to evaporate or drain slowly which can also present challenges for your lot or even for your business. No one wants to park their car in the middle of a lake.
At this time you have one great advantage that will not be available in a few months: You can access the drain easily. Many municipalities have their crews out clearing drains on public streets and highways so now is the time for you to clear that drain and keep it clear. It is also something to consider doing all year round. Anything from grass clippings to construction material to trash can clog a drain. By keeping your drains free of debris you are beautifying the property.
When the snow starts falling here in Central Pennsylvania and Michael B. Stoner Inc. clears your lot we are going to push the snow towards the edge of the lot. It will begin to melt at some point and the melt water will begin taking the path of least resistance towards the drain. When it can’t reach a blocked drain it will begin to pond and there is a good chance that it will refreeze overnight. You just won’t be able to get rid of all of that water and now you’ll have an ice pond in your lot.
If you keep your drains clear you will have fewer headaches to deal with and your snow removal experience will be much smoother. The snow melt will be much more efficient whether it is a light snow or a major winter storm. The other half of the equation is getting your lot commercial lot cleared and that is where Michael B. Stoner Inc. comes in. We cover Central Pennsylvania from Chambersburg to Carlisle to Harrisburg and Hershey and we are fully insured.
