From Sweeping to Snow

From Sweeping to Snow

Wow. Where did the summer go? I can’t believe it’s time to think about winter already now that the summer is unofficially over. Our sweepers and line painters still have a good 2-1/2months to go strong, yet we all need to remember the snow October 2011 Halloween storm that dropped 5-1/5” of snow across the Harrisburg area. http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/10/octobers_storm_power_outages_t.html

Many people don’t know what all goes into the preparation for winter. As a snow removal contractor we do many of the same things as the normal person should do for winter preparation. We need to do safety inspections to every piece of equipment to ensure the safety of our employees since we will be in the worst driving conditions you can be in. Just because it passes state inspection doesn’t mean it is winter ready. Each piece of equipment will be verified that it has a flash light (that works), first aid kit , fire extinguisher, Flares or reflective triangle, power supply for cell phone, shovel and etc.

As it gets colder we will start to strongly encourage our employees to start getting a storm bug out bag together. This bag will have a cell phone charger, water, snacks, change of clothes, sweat shirt, etc

We encourage our employees to make sure that they start getting their families nestled in for winter and all winterizations done at home. Employees new to snow removal do not realize when we have a small storm the may not be home for a day and a half and a large storm a week and a half

What are the things you do to get ready for winter?
When do you think the first snow will be in the Harrisburg area
